There are many ways to do this RIGHT and a few ways to do this WRONG! Let's talk about 3 things I want everyone to do when looking for a job.
1. Only Applying to Posted Positions
This can drastically lessen your chances of finding work quickly. Use your network, send your resume to friends, family, and colleagues working for companies you are interested in and ask if they know of any positions available. It's said that on average 2 million ppl will email resumes for nationally posted positions online and that only 2-3percent get an emailed response.
2. Not Having Job/Career Focus
Stop saying, "I'll take anything!", "I'll work anywhere!", "I just need a job!". These statements are too broad and no one knows how to help you when you use that language. Take some time to think about what you want to do, even if you have 3 areas you are focusing on, this still gives your network some guidance on what jobs to suggest to you.
3. Stop Using the Same Resume For Every Job
When you apply to a different position you should have a customized resume every single time. It shouldn't be too long or go into detail about things that are not relevant to the position you are applying for.
